Former MetroStars midfielder Taras Gomulka makes A-League debut with Adelaide United

Fast with a natural flare. That is how former MetroStars under-18 coach Nigel Gill remembers Taras Gomulka.

Gomulka, who made his A-League debut with Adelaide United against Brisbane Roar last Saturday, spent three seasons with MetroStars.

His talent was quickly recognised and Adelaide United’s Youth team signed him in 2018.

But Gill, who is now reserves coach at Modbury Jets, said those at MetroStars always knew the rising star would be unlikely to remain part of their club long-term.

“He was really talented and just balanced as a soccer player,” Gill said.

“He was able to implement what we were trying to do, then he would put his own creative spin on it."

“MetroStars would’ve benefited from Taras sticking with them, however, everybody recognised that he was very talented and we only wanted the best for him.”

Gomulka, now 18, began his career at Modbury Vista, switched to Adelaide City, then Raiders, before spending time with the Skillaroos and the National Training Centre squad.

He joined MetroStars when he was 15 and his talent shone through.

He was quickly promoted from the under-18s to the reserves and won the rising star award in 2017.

Gomulka was one of 14 SA-born or raised players in the 18-man Adelaide United squad.

“This gives younger South Australian boys hope that if they can do really well then opportunities might open up for them,” Gill said.

It was one-way traffic from there as off-season recruit Mori, impressive in a playmaker role, got the first of his double with another fine finish.

United coach Carl Veart invited Gomulka to train with the squad after the coronavirus shutdown with the departures of internationals Mirko Boland and Michael Maria.

He was then awarded a senior team call up and helped United claim a 1-0 victory against Brisbane at CBUS Super Stadium, Gold Coast.

Gomulka said lining up in the NPL helped shape him into the player he was today.

“I was fortunate enough to train under a number of different coaches throughout my journey to making my A-League debut,” he said.

“(I) want to thank each of the clubs for their support and influence on my development.

”Gomulka was proud to have made his debut in United’s first game since the COVID-19 shutdown.

Cementing a regular start was his goal for the remainder of the season.

“I was very nervous at the start (but) after the warm up, though, I felt good,” he said.

“I thought my performance was quite good on the weekend, I enjoyed it, it was a great experience for me.”
